Melee for bugs, ghouls etc, Shotgun for cqb, Gauss for long range, and Missile Launcher for boss enemies. Rifleman is probably the best weapon perk because it benefits most weapons, you can use a shotgun for cqb and a rifle for long range, all with 1 weapon skill investment.

I buy Fusion Cores with the rest of the money. Here's some ways I got them real quick.-Level up your item looting perks to find shotgun shells more often in crates and other containers. (XBox One) I need them to use my Explosive Combat Shotgun. I usually sell all my useless stuff and buy all the ammo I need (I only use 3 types of ammo, Shells, 2mm Cartridge and Missile) so I always keep making caps. As a long-time player of Fallout 4, at level 128, I've learned that shotgun shells are expensive and quite hard to find. Since money is useless and infinite, just buy all the shotgun ammo from traders. Scrounger is a dumb perk, even dumber than nightvision. I had more than 100k caps on my previous playthrough.
